Terry Towelling – A Short History

Terry Towelling

For a cloth that seems so evocative of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s its somehow crazy that the basis for the material with its protruding loops of thread has been traced back some 4000 years BC, with pieces found that were woven in ancient Egypt and in pre-Columbian Peru. It’s effectiveness in absorbing large amounts of water has meant that it has been used to keep people dry for many thousands of years.

It wasn’t until the middle of the Victorian era that the material reached Europe, after travellers noted the material being used in Turkey. For years the material was called Royal Turkish Towelling and was bestowed Royal patronage by Queen Victoria and remained popular solely as a towelling material right up to the first World War.

Between the War’s the French started to use the material for clothing and it underwent a name change of “French Terry” and “Terry Towelling”, likely as a result of the French word “ tire’ “ (pull) which give the loops their distinctive look as a result of the special looms used that have two longitudinal warps through which the weft is fired laterally. Despite the machinery involved it was a slow process and as a result Terry-Towelling (usually in pure cotton) was considered a luxurious and expensive material.

Fast Forward to the late fifties and it became a popular beachwear material. The quality had been further refined so that the outer side was smoother than the inside. (Unlike Towels where the looped material was on both sides). This made it a much more visually appealing as well as a practical garment.

Terry (French) Towelling hit the big screen courtesy of a belted baby-blue playsuit adorning the enigmatic James Bond as he lounged around the pool, pausing occasionally to pat ladies’ bottoms, in the 1964 film Goldfinger. It took someone as masculine as the Sean Connery to pull off this quite camp look, especially with the shortness of the shorts.

Auric Goldfinger also sports a terry cloth lined lounge shirt (in Gold naturally). Goldfinger, as a man of luxury should be sporting this material and appears both appropriately and fashionably dressed for poolside 1960’s Miami.

Bond sports Terry Towelling in other films too. He appears in an oatmeal-coloured camp-collared Safari style shirt in Diamonds Are Forever, and of course Dr No. The Dr No Polo shirt is probably the most famous and a piece that has been a main stay of high-end fashion house Orlebar Brown’s wardrobe. Ironically the original shirt in the film was a cotton pique and its style was appropriated by Orlebar Brown and remade in Terry Towelling and so the ‘copy’ has supplanted the original. Thankfully Mod Shoes have remade this item at a substantially more affordable price and yet no less stylish, looking as cool on the streets as on the sun-kissed beaches of the Caribbean.

Terry Towelling was used in a number of other areas too. It was a common material for nappies where its comfort and absorbency made it the ideal material to use. Perhaps its most familiar use was in the sporting world. I’m sure anyone reading this will remember the likes of tennis legend Bjorn Borg, Brighton Centre half Steve Foster and others sporting head and wrist bands as aids to absorb sweat during their endeavours.

And, finally, of course, the ubiquitous white terry towelling sport sock. It’s hard to say when these crossed over into the fashion world. Possibly the Mods were the first, with their love of magpie-like appropriation of sports and casual items. (Or maybe Sweet Gene Vincent with his “white face, black shirt, white socks, black shoes”). The look was also adopted by the Two-tone Rude Boys whose ankle height trouser hems were thrown into sharp relief by the pristine white flash of sock and who could forget The Jam when they burst onto the scene in monochrome suits and ties. White socks were the prevailing look of the Mod Revival and beyond. Not bad for a material some 6000 years in the making…

Everybody Knows A Terry ! – Modshoes Presents Episode 1

We thought it would be good fun to do a short story as a movie. All the Actors are friends of Modshoes , and gave up their time to have some fun and make an amusing story, which we hope you enjoy. And of course , it gives us a great excuse to show some of our shoes and clothes.

This first episode is based around our good friend Terry. Terry is one of the nicest and generous people you will ever meet, and makes every one laugh their head off, when in his company. But his time keeping is well known as being ‘Lack Luster’ . Anyways we all thought this would might make an amusing first episode.

Massively influenced by the Short Film Series, Svengali by Jonathon Owen.

The Shirt Terry is wearing, will becoming out soon. Its inspired by the Billy Preston one, from the Get Back Beatles Movie

Mary Quant 1930 – 2023

As many of you know Mary Quant passed on the 13th April.

Reflecting on her legacy here at Modshoes , she was a big influence in our Mod 1960’s world, long before we started the company.

For me personally she exudes the 60’s as much as The Beatles, The Mini Car, Twiggy etc. Her Vidal Sasson haricut is perfection.

To effect that many people,it just doesn’t happen that often.

From her fashion designing, to running a brand way beyond the simple mini skirt is something I personally look up to, companies in those days were generally far more one dimensional.

The iconic Flower petal trademark was a master stroke and could be used across many items, and of course you still see it today.

The Clothing and Shoes at the recent VA exhibition were great to see, but one can only imagine the shock of them at the time !

Also she didn’t come from money, like a lot of those 60’s stars. They came from a similar place, incredibly creative and forward thinking which is something that I admire a lot.

RIP Mary Quant

Terry Hall 1959 – 2022

Terry Hall’s passing is a very sad day for us here at Mod Shoes.

For me, (Andy) he and The Specials changed everything in 1980. My nan brought me that 1st LP, after a lot of nagging, Andy’s Records, Mill Road, Cambridge. Everything about that LP is perfect. The words and music combined meant so much more than just pop music. They really did affect a generation.

Then I saw them for the first time on TV, Rock Goes To College; the audience on the stage, the suits, the brogues, the loafers, the music so incredibly catchy, fast and angry, but not moronic. Songs got faster at the end, they really excited a crowd.

I was only 11 , when they were at their height, They played Cambridge on the Common, and I desperately wanted to go. Mum wouldn’t let me ! And probably for the best, the gig ended in a riot and the arrest of Jerry Dammers.

You only have to look at videos on YouTube now of the “Dance Craze” movie, and see the clip ‘Enjoy Yourself’ . Think your band is good ? Your band is nothing until you are as good as The Specials live. That’s a benchmark very few people get to reach

Fast Forward to 2009 , and I have tickets for 5 nights of the 1st tour of that reunion, I was there in Newcastle that 1st night, Sheffield the next night and so on. It was amazing , and I got to do what I promised myself at age 11, to go and see them on tour lots !

I have followed Terry’s career from those days, I got the Colourfield single when it came out. I always looked out for him being interviewed. I always thought him an interesting guy. Only last week i listened to him on BBC Headliners, which was from last year. He seemed so much happier with the world, and talked about the joy of his children and his beloved Man UTD. I was genuinely pleased that he seemed to have found peace with the world, and enjoyed his day to day life.

As you know, we did a Terry Hall inspired top last year, and I am wearing it today, The Specials remain one of my all time favourites bands ever

Terry Hall, may I thank you for being you, and inspiring this 11 year old boy. I am so grateful for the music you produced and how you changed the world for better.

RIP Terry Hall. And my condolences to your family

Women’s 60’s Shoes

When it comes down to 60’s clothing, it really does cover a wide range of diverse trends. From go go boots matched with mini skirts, to bell bottom jeans and tie dye t-shirts, oh and lets not forget the PVC! What a moment that was!

Now Mod Shoes has always included a love for the 60’s and its wonderful styles and colours, with this they brought out several 60’s inspired shoes over the years, with lots of happy customers loving the memories flooding back.

Image (above) featuring The Marianne In Red Patent by Mod Shoes

Let’s start by chatting about the popular Marianne. These currently are available in 4 colourways… Plum, Vanilla Patent, Black Patent and Red Patent. This design was picked out straight from the 60s, with some even saying they have seen similar in photos dated way back to the 1920’s!
The Marianne design was developed from an original pair of the 1960’s which very quickly became one of our most iconic sold shoes, with its quirky details and style, our customers loved these, especially as dancing shoes.

Image (above) featuring The Steph In White And Black by Mod Shoes

In the early 60’s, a flat shoe with a pointed toe was an extremely popular design, and the benefit of this was that these elongated legs, which in the 60’s looked great with a Mary Quant style mini skirt. With this in mind, Mod Shoes released the Steph last summer, in three colourways – Black/White, White/Black and Duck Egg and White.
The beauty of the Steph is that despite the pointed toe, these shoes are extremely comfortable and durable in all occasions. With its flexible leather, it really does offer lots of room to dance in!

Image (above) featuring The Marcia In Tan by Mod Shoes

Now if we look at the late 60’s, everything changed with the ladies shoes, pointed toe became less popular and in came the squared toe! Shoes in the 60’s were a huge focal point in an outfit and a lady wearing a squared toe was considered very stylish! Mod’s love a funky tight with a flat shoe. The Marcia’s at Mod Shoes was introduced as part of this research and was brought in as a squared toe brogue. The gorgeous and exclusive design really surpassed our expectations, the chunky buckle design along with the zig-zag cut, really gives the shoe an authentic shoe.

When the Marcia’s were released, our customers ran to buy these as the style had such a huge nod to the late 60’s, early 70’s, and was introduced as a must have dancing shoe!

Image (above) featuring The Prudence In White by Mod Shoes

Now last and no means least, we have our classic and much loved Prudence’, if you are looking for another great 60’s style shoe, this is a must have! Our Prudence’s are available in Black, White and Red. These Twiggy inspired shoes have a nod to the icon herself.
Our Prudence’s have a reel retro feel, and are again based on a vintage shoe from the 60’s, but offer a modern twist that can equally look good in today’s era.
