The Downing is a men’s 300g striped top by 66 Clothing, finished in Summer Blue, White and Grey. It sits somewhere between a T-shirt and a polo in feel, with a thicker cotton-poly fabric that gives it more shape than a standard tee. The look takes inspiration from mid-60s surf clothing, with a touch of Mod and early casual style in there too.
The Downing takes its cue from the striped surf tops that turned up on Californian beaches in the mid-60s. Even the name nods to a celebrated surfer from that era.
Version 2
We had a few people wanting to wear the Downing more as a proper top, especially untucked, so Version 2 has been adjusted. It is around 1 inch shorter than Version 1, and the sleeves have also been altered so they sit neater on the arm.
Version 1 looked good, but Version 2 has a much better silhouette. It feels closer to a polo now, rather than just a heavy T-shirt.
Andy’s Thoughts
This is one of those tops that people seem to notice. I’ve worn several Downings, both here and abroad, and people often say, “I like that top.” I think it’s because it looks a bit smarter and more considered than a normal T-shirt.
The 300g fabric is much thicker than a run-of-the-mill tee. It feels more like the sort of fabric you might find on a sweatshirt or rugby top, but cut in a cleaner summer shape.
I have worn one in the heat, but I deliberately wore it slightly loose. If you wear it fitted on a really hot day, it may feel a bit warm. For late afternoons, evenings, holidays, UK summer days, weekends and nights out, it works really well.
It also has that 60s Paul Weller / Mod feel without being too obvious. Some of the colourways also lean slightly into that early 80s casual look, which I really like.
What To Wear It With
The Downing works well with jeans, shorts or chinos. We’d wear this Summer Blue & Grey version with dark denim, stone chinos, navy shorts, Dewey shoes, Gola trainers or desert boots.
Why Choose The Downing?
If you like the idea of a T-shirt but want something with a bit more weight and shape, the Downing is a good option. The heavier fabric gives it a smarter hang, and the limited run means you are unlikely to see many people wearing the same one.
Only around 100 have been made in this colourway. No restocks, no second run.
Sizing
The Downing fits true to 66 Clothing sizing. If you wear an XL in Gabicci or other 66 tops, stick with XL here.
If you are planning to wear it abroad or prefer a looser fit, you may want to consider going up a size. A slightly looser fit can feel better in warmer weather.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this just a T-shirt?
Not really. It is shaped like a tee, but the 300g fabric gives it more weight and structure. It feels closer to a polo or lightweight rugby-style top.
Can I wear it untucked?
Yes. Version 2 was adjusted specifically because customers wanted to wear it more as an untucked top.
Is it good for hot weather?
It can be worn in warm weather, especially if worn slightly loose. On very hot days abroad, it may feel warmer than a standard lightweight T-shirt.
Is it true to size?
Yes, it is consistent with 66 Clothing sizing. If you prefer a looser fit, especially for holidays, consider going up one size.

Excellent t shirt but I had to go a size bigger than normal.

Slightly shorter than the previous Downing t shirts which looks better when worn untucked. Nice heavier weight t shirt as with previous Downings, look forward to more colours
