Modshoes Meets Gibson Clothes

modshoes-gibson-clothes-banner

Recently Mod Shoes have wanted to bring a few more interesting shots of the shoes to you guys. There are lots of shots of the shoes on their own, which are cool, but we always thought it is hard to imagine size, colour, and what it might look like with another piece of clothing etc.

mod shoes mods book clothes
Page 22 and 23 of the Mods book by Richard Barnes. It doesn’t say what makes etc, just contemporary clothes

In the MODS book by Richard Barnes, there is a double spread that shows some white jeans with desert boots, and what I assume to be a dark brown suede jacket. I have always liked the whole outfit and thought it smart. I am guessing it was done as part of window display

Anyway, we had done a few shots, but then I got talking to Simon at Gibson Clothing, and said do you fancy bringing down some of your new range to combine with the shoes? You can now see what we came up with.

I also wanted to show the shoes in a slightly different light, meaning that I am guilty of wearing my Oxblood Tassel Loafers with jeans and Harrington, and why not? Loafers and Harringtons were made for each other, but surely that is not the only way to wear Tassel Loafers, or Royals for that matter.

The idea being, that hopefully it inspires you guys to give the English company Gibson Clothing a go, and also to inspire perhaps, some different outfits for yourself.
I am really chuffed with the pics, and want to thank Simon for bringing the clothes along. Anyway, enough chat, let’s have some pics!

Loving this first shot, the silver grey ‘Vinnie Style’ coat, waistcoat and matching trousers, look ace with the Oxblood Tassel Loafers. In the picture you can see the jackets and trousers have a thin red check, combined with one of our vintage scarves , to our mind ‘Instant Outfit’

A more country inspired outfit here. This has the distinct feel of vintage, but tough wearing. Notice the cuffs of the jacket match the waistcoat.

Morgate Jacket £199 Waistcoat £65

This lovely overcoat again goes really well with the Loake Royals in oxblood, the trousers also have a faint red detailing around the pocket.

Vinnie Coat £199 Trousers £65

A very casual, going for Sunday lunch (or the pub) look. We combined this with Modshoes gold scarf, to set off the Dark Green jacket. The jacket is made of a heavy material, so is suited to Sunday scooter ride wearing perhaps

Harrington £199 Trousers £65

Stride out in this outfit, match this with a well fitted shirt and you are going to look very sharp at Northern Soul or Ska do, or somewhere you need to look cool.

Vinnie Coat £199 Trousers £65

Here we matched the blue jacket with Loake Eton Suede Tassel Loafers. The Mustard socks and golden scarf, compliment the blue well and add a dash of colour.

Harrington £199 Trousers £65

Above and below you can see the Oxblood Weavers with the Vinnie jacket. The oxblood colour of the shoes lends itself really well to the outfit. As you can see in the close up the red of the shoes matches very well with the Coat, waistcoat and Trousers.

Suggs the smart Geezer !

Suggs the smart Geezer !

I first came across Suggs as a young lad, along with The Specials, Dexys etc. Madness were part of a great smattering of cool bands from that era.

Most of the bands shone very brightly for a year or 2, but Madness have hung around. They are in the UK, part of our culture now, playing both the Olympics ceremonies and Royal celebrations and their tunes light up any day. If you dj and have a room full of all ages, madness will get the 7 year old and the 70 year old moving.

Now not for a minute am i suggesting that Madness or even Suggs are Mods, but there is an obvious line back to SKA. Suggs has often said about his love of SKA in many interviews, but he has also recently mentioned that he had leanings to the MOD thing. In his biography he mentions going to see The Who at the Charlton Football Ground, which i believe did future members of The Chords.

In the book he mentions buying a riding an LI150. Chas smash also had one. He talks about cutting his hair short whilst everyone else was long. To me sounds like a
young Weller !

mod shoes suggs autobiography
Suggs has a biography out, it is a good read and as entertaining as a Madness song.
mod shoes suggs on a vespa scooter
Not the Li150 he had when he was younger.

Anyways back to the story, when i was younger Suggs looked friendly and came over well on the telly. The songs they developed became classics and his dress sense changed but he always looked dapper. Even mid 80s period he dressed like he had thought about it.

So why this blog?
Well many of us Mod types cite people like Marriot, Weller etc, as an influence, Suggs was one of mine.

Looking back now you can see a IVY skin look rather than the OI! look that many skins had. He wears a lot of amercan influenced clothes, which to my young eyes, just looked cool. For every pic of him in his cherry reds, you can also see him in mixture of Tassel Loafers & Brogues.

mod shoes madness-one-step-beyond-stiff-suggs in brogues

On the front cover of One Step Beyond, brown full wing tip brogues. 3 of the rest of the band in Tassel Loafers. I think this is why i wanted a pair of both at 11 years of age. I had to wait at least a year for a pair.

mod shoes suggs in chequered jacketThe suits at the time weren’t classic 3 button affairs, but they looked right, Suggs very often wore a 1 button jacket, which i always thought looked great on him. The Chequered jacket in Embarrassment is just brilliant and no one could pull it off like him.

I must admit his look went very 80s as the decade progressed but i dont remember any long hair or dodgy leather jackets.

The next i heard of him, he was managing Liverpool band The Farm. Pics i saw of this time was very IVY inspired Harringtons and Jeans with turn ups. Once Madness started getting back together properly then smart suits were the order of the day. Notice in the pics Suggs has his trousers or jeans tailored right.

mod shoes madness 01

mod shoes suggs in two tone brogues

He has had a variety of shoes in these recent times, but he seems to favour Loake Brighton Tassel Loafers and Two Tone Brogues. At Glastonbury he wore some very dapper brogues, and that is pure madness ! how did he keep them clean !

Anyways hope you liked this little blog.

The final picture is a great one, look at those colours, god he looks good. Get the biography it is great and if you get chance try and catch his show about his life it is very entertaining.       mod shoes suggs_back_cover

The Differences between Women’s Tassel Loafers, by IKON & DJ

mod-shoes-the-difference-between-womens-loafersThe Differences between Women’s Tassel Loafers, by IKON & DJ

We sell a lot of Tassel Loafers but we have two main types for women. IKON and DJ both produce a classic 70’s / Northern Soul / Ska loafer. Both brands are a good seller but have slight variations which I wanted to mention.

The Fit
Out of the two shoes the IKON comes up smaller, and as you can see in the pic below, it is cut more for a smaller foot. We suggest the IKON for a slim foot, and the DJ for the wider foot.

facebook-mod-shoes-womens-tassel-loafer-difference-in-makes

The Styling
Both shoes are very similar, The DJ has extra stitching on the back of the shoe; this is to make it easier to get the shoe on without the aid of a shoe horn.

mod-shoes-womens-tassel-loafers-dj-and-ikon-stitching-on-back

The extra stitching on the side of the DJ shoe does make it stronger and less prone to coming off, but I think it would take some serious abuse for the stitching to fail.

mod-shoe-womens-tassel-loafers-dj-stitching mod-shoe-womens-tassel-loafers-ikon-stitching

One thing that is very hard to get over in the pictures is that the IKON does look daintier than the DJs. We have also noticed that the IKON loafers are very popular with teenagers when they see them.

The Leathers
Both shoes are made from leathers and the Oxblood has the black shine to it. It looks like an old fashioned chair, like you would see in a nice hotel.

The Sole
The DJ shoe has a full leather sole and the IKON has part rubber. The DJ is part rubber on the heel, whereas the IKON is full rubber.

Where are you going to wear them?
If you are into northern soul and like sliding around the floor, the DJ brand is better for you. The IKON suits the SKA scene better as the rubber obviously makes the shoe a lot more stable.

If you are wearing them just to look good, then both are excellent value. IKON come in black and Oxblood, as do the DJs, although if you are a size 6/40 or above you can get various different leather styles and looks.

What to wear them with!
There are many different looks that work with this style of shoes, jeans, tights, socks etc. Here are some pictures that we did a while back showing this.

I have seen a lady at a MOD do wearing the two tone ones. The outfit she combined them with was a classic 60s dress and white tights. The white of the tights blended well with the shoes, whereas a solid coloured shoe may have looked too stark.

Size matters!
Both loafers grow with wearing and this is meant to happen. For the best fit, we advise that the shoes should be snug, not loose, when you first try them. The shoes will grow after about 5 hours of wear. We advise wearing thick socks, and spending some time (i.e. the night before) just sat watching TV for a while before going out in them.

Returns
So you know we offer semi-free returns, meaning we will send 2 pairs for free. So try the first pair and if you don’t get on with them send them back and we will send out another. We will send to you for free, but you have to pay for the return to us.

We hope this helps, if you need any further assistance we are friendly people at Modshoes. Ring us on 01733 459976 and we will do our best to answer your questions.
